In the Sixth Form, most students will choose four AS subjects. We aim to provide as helpful a learning environment as possible for new Year 12 pupils, mindful of the considerable academic leap that takes place from GCSE to AS level. To this end, study periods during the academic day are supervised to help the development of independent learning which can be relied on in Year 13 when pupils have more free time to manage their work load.
At the end of the Lower Sixth, all students will have acquired a certain number of UCAS points for University entry from the units they have taken in their AS courses. This total provides the student and the Universities with an important indicator of academic potential and suitability for particular degree courses. One AS subject is then usually dropped for the second year of study (Upper Sixth or Year 13) and the more familiar pattern of three Advanced GCEs (A2s or A levels) will then be adopted. The more able and ambitious pupil may choose to continue with all four subjects to A2.
